It may be interesting to know that mild Bulgarian climate attracted frontiersmen in ancient times. More than 500 000 years ago first men came here and in IV millennium B.C. first settlements of ancient Aryans also appeared right here. One of the tribes managed to create a state which became a motherland to legendary head of gladiators - Spartacus. So, it can be said that climate made Bulgaria popular in the past and it still continues attracting people from all over the world.
Why Bulgaria climate is so unique?
Bulgaria is considered to have moderate continental climate, that’s why roasting weather is not typical for the resorts situated on the shore. Fresh breeze often blows from the sea and at nights temperature becomes pretty low. However, rains visit Bulgaria quite often and the most rainy month is considered to be June, while the driest month is September. The western part of the country is situated closer to the European climate zone. The climate of Danube lowland which is situated on the north from Balkan mountains can be characterized as continental with average temperature of January in -2… +2°С and July in +25 °С.
Stara Planina chain stretching through the country acts like a wall protecting Bulgaria from cold winds, so Bulgaria weather is mainly determined by the Mediterranean sea.
Lots of tourists are interested: what season of the year it the best for visiting Bulgaria?
Actually, there is no definite answer on this question as this country is ready to show its charming sights all year round; moreover, in summer and winter sea and ski resorts are especially in demand.
Spring is considered to be a very good season for coming to Bulgaria on excursions. The weather is usually very nice at this time, and the cultural life of the country is flourishing, so you may see a lot of popular tourist attractions, buying a few-days tour. Moreover, prices in spring on any kinds of entertainment are usually much lower than in summer. So, if you are interested in saving money, visit Bulgaria in spring and don’t worry – the weather will be fine!
Still, the majority of tourists visit Bulgarian resorts in summer as they find it more interesting to swim in the sea and sunbathe rather than going on educational excursions. As it was mentioned above, June usually offers rainy mood, that’s why if you want to go on sunny holidays, postpone your trip till July. From early July to late September it is better to visit Bulgarian resorts: the sea is usually warm in this season, the weather is sunny, and the temperature picks u to +23…+30°С.
By the way, some tourists like visiting Bulgaria particularly in September – it is still warm in this period of time, but the beaches are not so overcrowded and there are still a lot of fruits ripening.
Speaking about regions, it’s possible to highlight that the shore of the Black sea is the warmest area, and the hottest resort in Bulgaria is considered to be Sandanski resort. The coldest place in Bulgaria is the city Smolyan which is situated in mountains. If you want to visit the capital of Bulgaria – Sofia – be sure that the climate of this city is very mild and pleasant. From July to August the temperature is usually about +28°С, from December to February – about +3 °С.
Unfortunately, in the middle of October the weather becomes cold and the resorts stop inviting tourists, so till December it is possible to go only on cultural excursions. In December a new touristic season starts, and if you want to see snowy Bulgaria, then you should come in winter and visit mountain resorts. You’ll definitely like doing active sports on famous winter resorts, such as Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovets and, probably, celebrate New Year right here.
